How would prop 8 compromise religious freedom?

Please, try to keep this civil.

I dont understand how allowing JOP marriage, outside of houses of worship compromises the Churchs (or Synagogue, or Mosque or what have you) sovereignty to choose whom they decide to marry. The amendment pertained to non-religious, state-officiated marriages. The idea that churches could lose tax-exempt status is, in my understanding, a fallacy based on a single churchs ownership of some public lands that they refused to rent to a gay couple for their wedding. The church itself could refuse all it wanted, it was just the public land they owned that could not be denied.

So, Im not trying to be challenging, I just want to hear real and insightful defense, how does prop 8 challenge your religious freedom or the religious definition of marriage?

Answer: The amendment was very simple: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California." That is the entire text of the proposition.

A defeat of Prop 8 would have upheld a ruling of CA Supreme Court which overturned the previous marriage laws, and hence, made it legal in California for homosexuals to marry.

You have to realize that marriage is a legal instrument between two people that is recognized by the state, whether it takes place in a house of worship or at city hall; to the benefit of the state that they marry in order to produce more citizens of the state.

Ask yourself: Why would the state need to recognize marriage or validate it? One of several reasons is because marriage sometimes happens in a place of worship.

Should a gay couple wish to get married in a church of their choice, but it is against the moral teaching of that church in order to do so (and that church has been teaching that morality for a couple thousand years), that couple could legally file a lawsuit against the church for denying them. What if the lawsuit succeeds? Then the church is forced to break their values in order to accommodate someone else's?

What if a married gay couple wanted to adopt a child but only through a certain religious adoption agency? That religious agency, which does not recognize the marriage, and chooses to not place a child with the couple could be sued. In fact, that has already happened. Catholic Charities Adoption in Massachusetts closed up shop in the entire state because they refused to compromise their principles.

What if the aforementioned church refused to marry the gay couple and instead would rather close up shop in the state? That move would leave hundreds to potentially millions of people (depending on the church size) without houses of worship. What about the rights of those people? Haven't they a right to practice their religion without interference from the state? But how can that be if the state orders that they marry a gay couple?

New option for the people that cant vote No on 8 in California (and Florida and Arizona), can you do this?

If you cant vote note NO, then please do not vote on 8 at all.

Please read this all the way through, at least twice, before commenting.

Come to one of my same sex wedding. See two people in love dedicating their lives to one another and pledging to make the world around them better. Feel how moving their vows are. How their patents cry (sometimes) because they are so happy for their son/daughter. Their adopted kids thrilled that now the two people that love and care for them are a legal recognized family.

And at the end, everyone Celebrates! Many of my same sex couples are even more happy than my opposite sex couples because they have been oppress and wanting this for so long.

If you cant vote NO, please considering not voting on it at all. Dont let the fear in your heart lead you to an act that you will later regret and leave a broken crack on your heart. To take someone civil rights is an act all people with a conscious will regret. It has nothing to do with school, kids or churches. Its about civil rights and discrimination, and good people must always say NO to that.

So if you cant vote No, will you not vote on it at all? I know this is a challenge for some, and I appreciate and applaud you considering this option.

Who will pledge not to Vote on Prop 8?
Please actually READ it before commenting. I am not sure the first two commentators can read - just cut and paste.
And regardless what happens on Tuesday, I will still be performing Same Sex Weddings. I did before, and Ill do it after, you cant stop that.

Answer: I'll vote No on 8. its decades old legislation rewritten for a new age.

to the guy who said hes voting yes because it would "open a new can of worms" for suing religion:
you cant sue religions for discrimination. if a church doesnt want to preform a same sex ceremony, the law cant make them, and honestly, i wouldnt want the law to force someone to officiate MY wedding, gay or straight. its a wedding, its supposed to be HAPPY not resentful.

if you dont like gay marriage, dont have one. you have no right to tell your neighbor who they can and cannot marry.

Judge not, lest ye be judged...

think of it this way: in california we had a ban on gay marriage, and guess what: the courts ruled it UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
so those of you out there voting yes are voting in an unconstitutional law.
unconstitutional=against the single most important document in america.

also:
marriage is not just a religious thing, or this wouldnt be an issue. note that this is a human RIGHTS issue, not a religious issue. if the catholic church doesnt want to marry my friend and her female fiancee, more power to them, we'll find someone who DOES, like this very cool asker. not being able to marry denies people rights that should be granted to ALL couples that are in love and dedicated to each other.

omina vincit amour. love conquers all. even if these propositions pass, do you think thats it? you are sadly mistaken if you do, because it WILL get pushed to the USSC, and they WILL take the case and end this once and for all.
