Potential court attendees line up for seats to hear decisions in two cases regarding same-sex marriage at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, June 26, 2013. America's top court ... The two cases, both decided on 5-4 votes, concerned the constitutionality of a key part of a federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), that denied benefits to same-sex married couples and a California state law enacted in 2008, called Proposition 8, that banned gay marriage.
Seriously, whats wrong with same-sex marriage?
"Only a man and a woman can have children, so only a man and a woman should marry." Okay, does this mean that elderly people, infertile people, etc., who will not produce children, should not marry? For that matter, what about couples that dont even have sex (yes, they exist.. a LOT of them do)? Tons of cultures throughout history have raised their children communally, with several "mothers" and several "fathers." How in the world is two of one parent worse than only one parent at all (which isnt automatically a bad thing, either).
"Allowing same-sex marriages will undermine heterosexual marriages." Um, negative. Homosexual marriages, short-term marriages that end in divorce, marriages entrenched with domestic violence, marriages between swingers, etc. have absolutely no impact on the importance, relevance, or sanctity of my future marriage to my fiance.
Please be respectful and try to add something intelligent to this argument. Comments from either side are welcome so long as they are respectful. We all need to think out of the box on this one, as arguments like those in Minnesota meetings this week are just getting ridiculous, and embarrassing to the religious/conservative/Republican sides. No one needs to be embarrassed by these issues.
Anyone with thoughts on how to reach a resolution to the same-sex marriage debate is also welcome to share ideas!
"God created Man, then Woman so Man would not be alone." -First, there is no proof of such beginnings... at all. Second, if they were true, "Adam" was the only person in existence at the time... by creating "Eve," a god was not declaring same-sex couplings bad... the god was providing a measure for children to be possible. To use the above as an argument is to say that God intended all friends and companions to be of opposite genders, regardless of whether or not they were married or sexually involved.
Answer: Ok, let me take a thoughtful look at your arguments:
1. You set up biological reproduction as a straw man.
Answer: Biological reproduction is only where it starts. Clearly two homosexual people cannot reproduce, but the larger argument is that they cannot rear children as effectively as two people of different genders. Little boys need father's to emulate, and mothers to validate them. Little girls need mothers to teach them self respect, and fathers to feel protected and valued. And both little boys and girls need mothers and fathers to teach them how to relate to the opposite gender in a relationship.
Now, you mention the infertile. Is a chair not a chair if it has a broken leg? True, it isn't of much use, but it doesn't change it's identity. And infertile parents still possess several decades of inheritantly masculine or feminine qualities that can become the rail guards against socially damaging behavior in children they adopt.
Also, while members of any community add to the maturity of a child, both positively and negatively, COMMUNAL PARENTING is a primitive and discarded social tool...long since removed from modern civilizations. Diffusion of authority results in diffusion of responsibility. Ultimately, the welfare of a child must remain the sole responsibility of the genetic parents whenever possible.
2. You then suggest that each marriage, regardless of it's quality and composition exists in a perpetual vacuum from everyone else.
Answer: This is utterly ignorant and irresponsible. This line of thought is justified by the emotional idea that "Love is love! One cannot judge LOVE!!".
While this may make a very nice Hallmark card, it is a disaster in the real world. By using this criteria, not only will men and women be able to marry of their own gender...but also of their own families, other speicies, in groups of a dozen or more, and even with minors.
Don't think it can happen? (Sarcasm ON) Try thinking "outside the box" you judgmental moral absolutist who thinks that only straight and gay marriages are "moral"! (Sarcasm OFF).
Marriage cannot exist individually because we are a SOCIETY. In society, morals, ethics, modes of behavior and traditions are codified and adapted to serve society, rather than the individual. Marriage is a fundamental part of society. To suggest that one marriage has little or nothing to do with another is to play blind man's bluff near the Grand Canyon.
3. You then compare apples to rotten apples. You pose the ideal of two modest, financially successful and devoted gay partners against every single possible negative outcome in straight marriage.
The truth is, the homosexual lifestyle is disease and injury prone (statistical fact); they suffer higher levels of personal stress and emotional upset; they offer only a single gender-based perspective on reality, and they invested in open hostility against the rest of society (because they are an aberation, rather than the norm).
You then proceed to bash Conservatives...which is highly hypocritical for your plea to respectful dialouge.
So what is the answer?
1. We need to abolish "no fault" divorces. This will return stability to marriage and make it more difficult to simply have a big argument and start calling in the lawyers.
2. We need to recognize that marriage is about children, rather than our own selfish wants and desires. Marriage is an institution that creates an environment that CHILDREN can thrive in. Two people who are in love hardly need the convent of marriage anymore. But if there are children, marriage grants certain protections and safeguards (or at least, it will if we abolish the "easy" divorce).
3. People need to understand that MOST gay couples, statistically, never file for marriage (even in pro-gay marriage states). Far from the idea of every gay couple banging down city hall....less than 4% of the homosexual community have applied for a license in the states where it is legal. This is a political operation to achieve acceptance in society....and nothing more.
And lastly...
...Why are we encouraging something that is damaging to one's health, unsettling to one's heart, and puts one at odds with his fellow American?
...Most cities outlaw smoking because it harms both the individual and society. Doesn't encouraging homosexuality in our youth have much the same effect?
...Is being gay a choice? Yes, it is. One CAN be predisposed to a choice, but a choice is made. This is why judging gay lifestyle is appropriate and lawful. Choices can be judged. Conditions (like being a minority or a woman, for example) are not in the realm of choice. You cannot hold conditions against people.
Good Luck!
