What western food can I cook with the very limited number of western ingedients available here in China?
I want to learn to cook both western and Chinese food while I am living and teaching independentally here in China. If you could give me any advice as like a good website to learn to cook with only a wok and pot to work with and absolutely no stove available, it would be marvelous.
Answer: I lived in Taiwan for many years. Here are a couple of suggestions.
Make learning to cook Chinese food the priority. You have a rare opportunity to learn how to cook real Chinese food and make it taste the way it really should. And probably lots of Chinese people who would be eager to show you how to cook. And you will learn how to make things with the ingredients that are around you.
Along the way, you may learn that there is some overlap in technique. (e.g. Wu xiang bao is alot like bouquet garni, for example, with different ingredients). And you will learn how to use all five senses when cooking, like how to judge when the oil is truly hot enough to start stir frying.
Do you mean you have no stove or no oven? In Taiwan, there was no oven, but there was always a 2 or 4 burner gas stove, fueld by a gas can on the other side of the wall. If you are from the US, this seemed kind of like a camping stove, but it worked well enough.
Websites I don't know, but two great cookbooks are Modern Art of Chinese Cooking, by Barbara Tropp (who learned to cook in Taiwan) and Chinese Techniques by Ken Hom. If you can't get the 2nd one, try Foolproof Chinese Cooking, by Ken Hom.
For Western dishes you can still cook, this depends very much on what ingredients ARE available, so what part of China you're in. Where I lived, I found I could still make a reasonable job of Spaghetti with Pesto Sauce and a green salad. Chinese people you eat with may not want any cheese, so no harm done if you can't find it. And if they are leery of eating raw vegetables, then do something besides salad. (This leeriness comes because vegetables are sometimes fertilized with human excrement, in China. So maybe you should be leery too, while in China.) But where I was, I could always find fresh basil leaves and pine nuts, and another oil will do if you can't find olive oil.

How much did you pay for your horse?
What kind of horse is it?
What was its condition?
From whom and in what type of community did you buy it?
Answer: (Zip)
$4500, started under saddle towards WP training but very, very green, excellent breeding (for WP), just turned 4 years old, had been in professional training for two months, bought from an individual but kept at a WP trainer (the one I was working with at the time with my mom's horse) who had initially bought him, sold and bought with intentions of being a show horse but no show experience yet. That was in 2007. Now doing AQHA all-around and has points.
Vally
$1800, just broke to ride (western only at the time), no show experience yet, no real direction in his training (intentions of aiming for reining, but that's not what I wanted to do), not quite 3 years old, bought from a local breeder/trainer of Arabians. That was in 2000. Ended up showing Region XII stuff including the championships, plus some jumpers and dressage.
Dribbles
$3500, ten years old, been there/done that kind of horse, lots of open show/4-H show experience and a little AQHA, great pattern (hms/sms) horse, had never done English at the time (ended up being his best event with us--the Eq), deadbroke, bought from an individual (wasn't currently at a trainer). That was in 2005. We put some AQHA points on him, turned him into a HUS/Eq/Trail horse as well as the SMS/HMS, both my sister and I started doing AQHA on him, and he was my mom's first "show horse" when she got back into it.
Krymsun
$5000, four years old, had been in professional WP training for probably a year, had been shown and was doing well, daughter of One Hot Krymsun, not an easy ride, needed (still needs) a professional to maintain her but is shown by a youth, initially intended to be WP only but we turned her into an all-around horse, bought from the same WP trainer as Zip (was actually owned by an individual but was kept with him permanently). That was in 2008. Now she's regressed a little in the WP due to a major injury but is happier and more relaxed at a new trainer's barn and is re-learning the WP stuff as well as HUS, Eq, HMS, SMS, and Trail. Has a few AQHA points.

What do i need to know when traveling to Shenzhen china?
I dont know any thing at all about Shenzen china? can some of you guys tell me what do i need to know before I go there? where do i change my us dollars? would a $1000 us enough for a 14 days hotel and food in shenzhen?
Answer: Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China's Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. As a gateway to the world for China, Shenzhen is one of the most developed cities in China and a city that has grown the fastest.
Shenzhen Weather: Shenzhen features subtropical marine climate and has the following climatic characteristics: average annual temperature 22.5 ℃, extreme high temperature 38.7 ℃ and extreme low temperature 0.2 ℃; adequate sunlight average annual number of hours with sunlight 1934hr, sunlight percentage 44%; abundant rainfall (average annual rainfall 1966mm, maximum 2661mm,over 80% in summer, maximum daily rainfall 344mm); humid air (average annual relative humidity 77%); gentle wind (average annual wind speed 2.6m/s, dominant wind direction east, obvious land-sea breeze in summer, withsouthwest sea breeze during the day and northwest land breeze at night). The principal high impact weather events of Shenzhen are typhoon, storm, lightning, high temperature, thick fog and haze.
Shenzhen Food: Shenzhen is a typical immigrant city. So you can find cuisines of many other cities of China here. Additionally, Thai cuisine, Vietnam cuisine, Japanese cuisine, Indonesian Cuisine and many other Western-style fast-foods are available in Shenzhen too. Besides the traditional hotels and restaurants, various theme restaurants like cafe, tea house and snack bars are also very popular.
The Hottest Attractions in Shenzhen:
1 Splendid China-Folk Culture Village: It is the micro version of the scenic spots over China. In the park, about 100 scenic spots are distributed according to the territory of China and the whole park looks like a large map of China. The Chinese Folk Culture Village that is separate from Splendid China with a wall has gathered the architecture styles of the 56 ethnic groups in China. One ethnic group has one village, which is unique from another. In the village, at any time, you can see different ethnic performances free of charge by real performers of every ethnic group. You can feel the original traditional folk flavors. In particular, Oriental Rainbow-colored Costumes at the central theater in the afternoon and Dancing with the Dragon and Phoenix in the Phoenix Theater in the evening are the most wonderful.
2 Window of the World: Shenzhen Window of the World is one of the scenic spots in Shenzhen that you cannot miss when you come to Shenzhen. As a large cultural and tourist scenic area publicizing the world cultural essence, Shenzhen Window of the World has accumulated the soil of human beings’ cultures of thousands of years, including historic relics, key points of interest, natural scenes, world wonders, folk’ housing, sculpture etc, totally more than 130 scenic spots.
3 Happy Valley: It is one of the best theme fairylands in China and includes eight theme areas. It provides full service for the visitors. In the park, as well as the amusements and sightseeing spots, the hotel, shops and restaurants are ready all the time.
Travel tips:
1 Get a card of your hotel (if you are lost and no one understands your Manderin).
2 Get your hotel staff to write down the destination names for you on paper.
3 As a migrant city Mandarin is more widely spoken in Shenzhen than the Cantonese common elsewhere in the region. Taxi drivers are more likely to speak Mandarin than Cantonese. Shenzhen is a linguistic melting pot. You will likely hear every dialect and accent of Mandarin as well as the Guangdong languages of Cantonese, Teochew, and Hakka.
At last, $1000 will be enogh for you to stay 14 days in Shenzhen.

California Fires Out of Control As 500,000 Flee
Punishing winds and unstable thermal conditions -- married with strained firefighting resources -- stymied efforts Tuesday to contain a slew of wildfires burning for a third day across Southern California. College students from California to France for vacation?
How expensive would it be total???
Do you think 3 of us can pull it off???
Do we need to know the language somewhat???
What would be the appropriate time to stay there???
We are also planning on going to Germany and Sweden too????
Please give us advices!!!! We are all 19-20!
Answer: How expensive?
As a very rough approximation I'd budget $100/day per person, not counting plane fare to and from Europe (which will probably set you back at least $1,000/person). Note that that's assuming that you travel cheap, stay in hostels or low budget accomidation, don't drink yourselves stupid every single night, and so on. Get a guidebook to build an itinerary and get a better sense of expenses.
Can 3 people pull it off?
Definitely.
Do we need to speak the language?
English language penetration is very high in western Europe--locals appreciate it if you speak a little French or whatever, but you shouldn't have any real trouble getting around if you just speak English.
When is the appropriate time to go?
Whenever you can afford it really--the summer unfortunately can be hot and expensive. The winter cold but less costly.
Also planning on going to Germany and Sweden?
Fair warning--Scandanavia is really expensive. So is Paris for that matter, but you have to go to Paris at least once.
Advice?
Check out the following websites:
www.statravel.com--they have good deals for students/young people.
www.hostelworld.com and/or www.hostelbookers.com--just about every youth hostel on earth.
If you have student ID cards bring them along--you might be able to get a discount or two.

We live in hot Texas and want to move to Colorado. We dont have much money. Is Realty Trac reputable ?
We are interested in buying foreclosures, bank-owned, or any other cheap way to buy a house in Colorado. It seems like real estate is so expensive up there. My husband works for a home improvement corporation but doesnt make much money. My salary is $9.50 per hour. We have no children. Maybe someone with real estate expertise can help us to buy or get a little bit of land in Colorado preferably around Colorado Springs or around the Western slope area.
Answer: We are based in Colorado Springs and buy distressed houses, bank owned properties and work with movitated sellers. There is a lot of opportunity here, especially now. Let me know how interested you really are and and I will point you in the right direction and answer any questions you may have.

What factors change climates over long periods of time?
List factors that change climates over long periods of time and DESCRIBE how they change the climate.
Answer: The main climate changes have been as a result of tectonic movement, the moving of the plates on which we live. The movements alter the amount of heat escaping from the Earths core from above ground and oceanic vents.
This give us what is currently known as the El Nino and La nina systems in the major oceans. The changes in ocean surface temperatures are what causes the weather in various parts of the world to change.
What is not known, or not really understood, is how these systems are formed. The common "guess" is that the changes are caused by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a very poor and non proven theory.
The real, (and deliberately ignored due to political posturing of the CO2 protagonists), reason, is the thousands of volcanic vents on the floor of the oceans. These vents at the margins of the tectonic plates are continuously sending water heated to over 300 degrees centigrade into the oceans. The the heated water forms thermal layers called temperature inversions. (This is similar to those effects seen over major cities, where still warm air is trapped over the city by cold air above it in the atmosphere, and usually causes a build up of pollution).
When the hot water is carried by the ocean currents into areas of warmer water in the tropics, it rises to the surface, causing the El Nino effect. This effect can most easily be seen in the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. The cold water from the north polar waters is heated by the vents in the Puerto Rican trench, which reaches nearly all the way to Iceland, and rises to the surface around the Caribbean islands. The Earthquake in Haiti a couple of years ago, plus the Icelandic volcanoes which recently erupted, reduce the pressure of the vents in the trench, resulting in cooler water in the Gulf stream heading back into the North Atlantic, and causing the very bad winters Europe has had over the past two years.
The use of carbon dioxide as a "whipping boy" by environmentalists is just a ploy by radicals to disrupt the economies of western countries to meet their anti capitalist agenda. Unfortunately too many politicians have fallen for this subterfuge.

Is Dubai the best middle eastern country for a western girl to visit?
Ive always been fascinated with the Arab world, and have been wanting to visit. A guy I know told me that the best country for a single western girl to visit would be Dubai. I dont know much about the country, but it sounds interesting. What is there to see and do? Is it ok for a girl to go there by herself? How expensive is it?
Answer: Hey girly,
Yes, Dubai is probably the best place to go out of the entire Arab world. However...first lets clarify that Dubai is a CITY not a COUNTRY. It is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I had one of the best nights of my life in Dubai!!!!
Okay so Dubai is sortof like a cross between New York City and San Diego. It is a huge, growing, living city (complete with gridlock traffic in rush hour!). It is beautiful- great beaches! There is tons of stuff to do. Just wandering the city being one...the National Mall will take up a day- the man made islands, the tallest building in the world (181 stories) and then of course they have indoor skiing and all kindsof stuff. Or, you can rent a dune buggy and go to the desert. Walk through the gold souks and watch all the rich (or broke wanna be pretend rich) people waste all their money! LOL There is also the entertainment zone which was being built when i was there.
Relatively speaking, it is not very expensive contrary to popular belief (unless of course, you WANT to spend a fortune, in which case Dubai is definitely the place to do it!). When I was there a couple of years ago you got 4 durhams to the dollar. I stayed in a 5 star sheraton (which i highly recommend- rooftop hotub was open all night and they didnt mind bringing me beer after beer while in the hot tub!) for less than $200 a night- and thats with no research or going on expedia- I walked right off the plane and just booked the hotel from airport agent. So Id imagine you can find a pretty good deal. Unless your staying at the Burj (think like 5k a night) you'll be fine. Most things I found to be about the same in the US in terms of price.
You'll be perfectly find as a woman. It is polite to avoid wearing revealing clothing (IE miniskirts and string bikinis- but normal bikinis on the beach are okay). Basically...do your due diligence and check the country out first and just dont do anything stupid. A British couple got 90 days in jail for having sex in public on the beach for instance. Everyone speaks english there. The bus stops are all air conditioned, and if you are american you dont need a visa you just show up and waltz off the plane.
One thing, and only one thing i would caution you on. I've traveled all around the middle east. Dubai is sortof...well i dont know how to say it. It is an arab gulf country. Not to offend any Dubai citizens but...to me its not the "real" middle east. They have Chilis, Macaronni Grill- lots of american things (most of the gulf countries do though!). Keep in mind, it is just one city in the country. Abu Dhabi is also a great place to go. Also understand that foreign workers outnumber UAE citizens something like 4:1 I think. So ya you will SEE locals...but it might be difficult to actually meet and interact with them. If you want to do that, you can try to go to some shesha bars or something.
If you are new to the middle eastern world you might need to know that you will likely have a "reverse culture shock." There are some miss conceptions out there to a degree, especially regarding the treatment of women. People will generally be exceedingly polite and respectful- sortof the old gentlemenly way of old europe that no one does anymore is a good analogy. Of course, you should always have your wits about you in any place. Arabs are very hospitable and friendly for the most part- their culture places a great deal of respect and emphasis on the idea of hospitality (WAY more than in the USA or anyplace else ive ever been). They are also generally interested in talking to foreigners - though perhaps this isnt true so much in Dubai where the majority of people are indeed foreigners.
Good luck! hit me up if you want some pics or something. wealthistime AT yahoo

How come us americans are the only country smart enough to refute global warming as a hoax?
The majority of populations in western countries, and Asian as well acknowledge that man made global warming is real. I am just curious what stroke of genius has come to America that allows so many people to all believe it is actually a hoax perpetrated by an international body of scientists, the UN, other world governments, Obama and Al Gore?
Answer: Because it is a hoax. Do sum research, genious. Its actually the sun. It has a cycle in the solar system. That what it DOES!!!! Things gets cold, then they get hot. Sum people remain poor, others, like al gore and his made up global tax/ warming scam, made billions for his stinkin greedy self!

Is it a double standard for feminists to say anti feminists hate women yet?
Feminists say that anti feminists do research before we say that feminists hate men?
Answer: This is a kinda confusing question, but I *think* you meant to ask why the Feminists insist that anyone who is against them also (allegedly) "hates women", yet the very Feminists refuse to admit they hate men?
If that's what you're asking, then I agree with asking it. The trouble is - we've got such a backwards system these days thanks to the Dubbil Speak introduced by the Feminists in the 1960's (introduced mostly by Richard Milhouse Nixon) and early 1970's (under Gerald Ford) and the 1980's (Reagan's Presidency, then George H Bush's Presidency). The "right wing" seems to have introduced most of what the Feminists have tried to introduce. Dubbil Think has become Dubbil talk, where "like"="hate"; This is Equality, taken to it's illogical extremes. Oddly, the Feminist man-hate speech dropped to lower levels when Billy Clinton got elected, but the anti-male acts hotted up. Since George Dubbya got elected, the Feminists have been flummoxed as to what to do, given the obvious support by women for right wing positions (Ann Coulter, anyone?) This is what happened in Britain when Margaret Thatcher got elected as PM. British Feminism went around in CIRCLES for all the years she was in power.
The anti-male agenda reminds me of the Lysenkoism that killed the Soviet Union. Trofim Lysenko was a fire-brand who used the utter failure of Collective Farming Techniques to push his own ideas. The thing was these ideas were so bad and so vague, that they were difficult to disprove quickly. Oh, sure, they were disproved eventually, and thunderingly so - it caused the collapse of the Soviet Union's ability to feed itself. But by that stage it was a bit late.
Lysenko would announce some hare-brained idea, Stalin would smile and the announcement would get adopted as being "great idea". Real scientists would then work to see if the idea was correct, find it wasn't and try to get the idea dropped. By the time they had worked through the ideas, Lysenko had gone on to something else (just like Feminism) and then blamed the previous ideas on the horrible Opponents.
This is EXACTLY what the Feminists have done throughout their history. The best example of this is Prohibition.
Prohibition was forced on the United States by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. United they weren't. Temperate? Not in terms of the language they used. Christian? In Name Only. Women they certainly were. But they were actually Feminists, though they did not call themselves this. They BADGERED everyone they could, in virtually every Western Country, to adopt Prohibition. They succeeded most in the United States, where they enacted a change in the Constitution. In other countries, laws were enacted to do a similar thing.
When Prohibition was proven to be an utter farce, making racketeering invincible (look at Alphonse Capone) the Feminists stood up and opposed the very policy they had forced on everyone else - and blamed men for introducing it!
We see the same thing again and again - Hormonal Contraception was introduced by Feminists; then in the 1960's when women were dying because of the early Feminists' insistence on Contraception at ANY cost, the Feminists turned around and blamed men! Hey hot news flash- it was the Feminists who insisted that the contraceptives have so much hormonal ingredients that it was killing the very women they insisted they were helping.
BUT, let's blame men! When eventually hearings were held as to why so many women were bleeding to death, after using hormonal contraception, the US Congress were told it was men who had done it all. No mention of the fact that Feminism had forced the whole idea (like Prohibition) upon an unwilling populace.
Then the Feminists say that people who oppose the idea of Feminism hate WOMEN? Prohibition was as destructive to women as it was to men. Feminism promoted it, then tried to blame it's introduction on MEN! This was in spite of the men who spoke out against it's introduction. If Feminism does what is "friendly" to women, I'd hate to see what UN friendly is.

CHINESE PEOPLE: How are the people in the PRC different from the US?
Please give A LOT of detail. Im thinking of emigrating to there since I dont like living in the US.
Im of Chinese descent, by the way, so I dont think Ill look too different from the people already living there.
Answer: China does not allow immigrants. They have 1.3 B people. Are you for real?
If you have employable skills, you can get a green card to work there and renew it every half year.
Do you speak Mandarin?
Life in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong is pretty good actually. In Shanghai and Hong Kong, you will find plenty of Western people. I live in Taiwan, but I grew up in Hong Kong.
the major differences:
- The majority is Chinese
- If you like Asian women, then you are in luck, because there are tonnes of pretty girls on the subway
- Night life, plenty of it, all within walking distance and subway, no need for cars.
- Cheaper food
- More fashionable clothing
- More people
- Hot, much hotter
I suggest you go on vacation there first. I recommend you stop at Hong Kong, then Shanghai, then Beijing.

Do you think public nudity will ever become acceptable in Western society?
People today are extremely paranoid of someone seeing themselves nude probably as a result of the pressure society puts on its people to look amazing.
I for one am perfectly at ease with nudity. I dont see any reason to fear the human body or dislike it. Societys standards are ridiculous and frankly I dont agree with them.
Do you think there will ever be a time in which public nudity will be an acceptable part of western society?
Answer: Speaking as someone who detests her own body (when I lost the tone that I had) I wish it was acceptable. Then at least, I might not feel so bad. I agree with you though. Totally. I also wish I were at ease with my body, but she is the 'embodiment' of my insecurity on an emotional level and general lack of self esteem psychologically. However, despite my hang ups, which I swear are genuine, nothing gives the release and sense of self as a foreign holiday for one born and reared in a cold climate. I find myself forgetting most of what is ugly about me in hot climates and feel more sexual. I don't think everything is down to media pressure. Those of us who have to wrap up for 11 months of the year do experience real issues about a body that we don't see for that length of time, nor have to exhibit, nor have to moisturise and maintain. Plus, not all of us are Nordic, so indeed we have to work/ hide a less than strong and healthy genetic inheritance. (I am Irish).Irish girls even freak out with the idea of getting naked for sex Just maybe an added perspective to your very valid point.:)

Im keen about eco friendly electricity generating but am wondering which is the most cost affective as i am aware that some are more expensive than on the grid electrics.
Answer: If cost is greatest concern be warned that it is almost impossible to generate your own electricity at lower cost than the big boys can. They have economy of scale on their side. Even if you think you can, it is probably because you haven't factored in all the real costs, including the cost of money (capital).
It on top of being cheap you also want eco freindly then that is a BIG ask.
Try replacing as many electrical appliances with non electrical as you can for starters. Say solar heating for space heating and hot water, that is money saving and eco friendly.
The suggestion that CO2 is eco freindly and harmless when it comes from fossil fuels must have been asleep for the last 10 yrs or so. its that thinking got us into the GW mess we are in.
Likewise nuclear, yesss real good. no emissions, mmmm, no damage to water? Wonder if he has considered all stages of the energy cycle including the mining transport, construction of reactor decomissioning? Waste disposal? occassional failures, Chernoble ring a bell? 3 mile island?... Besides do you really expect that as an individual you will be allowed to build a nuclear power plant, even if you could afford it. Hey Iran wants to build nuclear plants, it says for power purposes, the western powers are saying we will not let you build an independent nuclear power cycle. You must buy fuel from us. You are not allowed to make your own! Sounds a bit like bully boy tactics, to enforce a cartel situation. The arguements about nuclear poliferation don't actually stack up against scrutiny as it seams it is now 'OK' to sell uranium to India even though it never signed up to the international inspections or non polliferation treaty (Iran has), and if Iran wanted to use the materials to create terror attacks it can with lowlevel enriched fuel in a dirty bomb anyway, right now and under the rules they are trying to impose.
(main problems with nuclear are social political and then economical, (most enjoy govt overt and hidden subsidies to be competitive).
So you could always build your own windmill, it is the easiest electricity generating power source to build yourself, that would make it cheap and possibly eco freindly if you choose the right materials, like recycled timber, and scraps. etc.

Steve Nash sat down on a playground bench in Washington Market park, like all the other tired Manhattan fathers. It was a summer evening, late in August, and somewhere in the scrum of kids roiling under the monkey bars was one of his 3-year-old twin girls, Lola, and her nanny. A few days after coming to terms with Thomson Safari, whose guides would escort me to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, I received an e-mail detailing the items I might want to bring along. The suggestions ranged from the sensible (hiking boots) to the unprecedented (battery-heated socks) to the alarming (personal urinal system). Why did the name change from global warming to climate change?
Those who dont believe in man made global warming say its proof it scientists have been misleading us with biased research.
But what do those people think who are believers in man made global warming? Why the name change?
Answer: It's not really a change of name, just the realisation that the lies are getting out of hand and they are trying to rationalise them. Here what i wrote for another answer, it may help you.
Well the biggest effect on the worlds climate comes from the El Nino and La nina systems in the major oceans.

The Somali pirates who are hijacking ships are claiming the the poverty of them and the ?
Somali people are at the root of the piracy; a statement I dont believe for a minute by the way, if thats the case, then when the US sent people to try and feed them why did they kill them and drag their bodies through the streets?, or is that just the same old song and dance used by a few criminals and terrorists to enrich themselves and support more criminals and terrorism?, and isnt it a good idea to not! kill people trying to help.
Answer: It's PRIMARILY the ILLEGAL FISHING Western Nations and other Nations have been doing as well as TOXIC WASTE dumping in SOMALI NATIONALL WATERS (200 Nautical Miles even by White man law-which White people change whenever it suits them (aka international law) that the INDIGENOUS NATIVE SOMALIS are PISSED off about. This has been going on since AT LEAST 1993. These LOCAL people were originally local Fisherman were were attacked by the REAL criminals (illegal foreign fisherman and toxic waste dumpers---in one article i read they sprayed on by HOT WATER hoses on the Somali Nationals who tried to stop them). And now when they enforce their GOD GIVEN RIGHTS and enforce the law -your White media calls them Criminals or Terrorists? Criminals in THEIR OWN COUNTRY. Fuck you, and fuck the immoral people who think like you. ESPECIALLY after the chaos and War Crimes the West has caused in Somalia since 2006 by funding the Ethiopian illegal and immoral invasion (which was based on a lie-like Iraq) and incredible War Crimes, which have cost TENS of thousands of lives since 2006 and displaced 2 MILLION people. FUCKKKKKKK YOU.

Was the creation of the UN during the Cold War flawed or successful?
Was the UN flawed in maintaining peace or upholding its role during the Cold War? Also was the Cold War inevitable and why didnt it escalate into a war?
From my understanding, the Cold War arose as a result of the political ideological clashes between the US and USSR...is this true/valid?
Also, during the Cuban missile crisis, which side deserved credit for avoiding a war?
Answer: It wasn't created during the cold war , but during the Hot one between the Allies and the Axis , the Hitler war , WW2 .
Conceived out of the idealism of the times it was fatally weakened from the outset because the big Allied powers would not give it real power nor agree to be ruled by this new " World Government " and hence you see the inability of the institution to deal with present problems , like that in Syria .
At best the U N can only bleat from the sidelines at any conflict on the planet that pitches any of the Great power blocs against the interests of another .
After WW2 Stalin's Russia ( which had planned to arm itself with a world class military and navy and become a major power in the world BEFORE the Hitler war ) , and in the ( probably true ) belief that they had done the lions share in defeating the Nazis , AND taken most of the damage , was in no mood to accept either the U S's assumption of the role of No1 power in the world , nor the Nuclear weapons blackmail , nor any restraint by any wishy-washy western liberal created " United Nations " authority , and so the cold war was inevitable .
Hot war was avoided only because it was blindingly obvious to all sides that a nuclear conflict would simply destroy all the combattant powers , leaving places like Guatamala as the new world leaders .
The cold war was dressed up as a war between ideologies , but in fact this is Boll*cks , it is just another struggle between World Great Powers .
The Cuban missile crisis arose because the U S had deployed nuclear weapons ( with U S crews and under U S command ) into Turkey , one of the Nato Allies facing the Warsaw Pact bloc , and with a frontier bordering the Soviet Union , and very close to the USSR's then oil and gas fields on the Caspian sea around Baku .
The Soviets started to deploy missiles into Cuba in response .
In the end , a deal was fudged up , behind the scenes , as usual , and both sides pulled back from the brink .
I can remember here in the U K as a child my Dad showing me the photo's in our newspaper of the Russian ships in the Atlantic with missiles in big cylindrical containers on the decks , and I remember my Mum crying with fear because she had been through the war as a child , in Germany , and she knew what war was like and what might be just a few days away .
I hope Kennedy and Kruschev and their henchmen are burning in Hell right now for their games back then .
Bastards .
And the U N was as much use then as it was today about Syria .
Bleating from the sidelines .
