Nihilism advocates that the ultimate truth is that there is no truth. Thats what Nietzsche advocates, maybe even Otto Stern. If the truth that there is no truth indeed, how would we respond to it? Wont everything just collapse when we accepted such ideology? Nihilism says that there is nor right or wrong. How do we respond to it then?

Answer: how would we repond, to there is ,no one truth? by letting go of justification for discrimination.how about ,ending all those religious rivalries and eliminating the need, to ostracize members of your family or community or condemn people to hell , or ending stoning people to death ,which is, by the way ,still practiced for religious reasons ,today in a few countries, or not getting our panties in a bunch ,and having our very existence threatened ,because someone questioned our fragile faith ,by making a movie called the da vinci code?

How does estella defend her position in humoring Bentley drummle?



Answer: She doesn't defend herself. She is what Miss Havisham made her and feels no need to explain her actions to anyone. That she was taught to make all men suffer is well-known. What difference if she humored Bentley Drummle or someone else? After all, Bentley pursued her.

This is a bit of the back-and-forth between Estella and Pip, when he confronts her about her allowing Bentley Drummle to pursue her (it's in chapter 44 of a book not divided into 3 volumes):

"Is it not true," said I, "that Bentley Drummle is in town here, and pursuing you?"

"It is quite true," she replied, referring to him with the indifference of utter contempt.

"That you encourage him, and ride out with him, and that he dines with you this very day?"

She seemed a little surprised that I should know it, but again replied, "Quite true."

"You cannot love him, Estella!"

Her fingers stopped for the first time, as she retorted rather angrily, "What have I told you? Do you still think, in spite of it, that I do not mean what I say?"

Ive noticed that most cant defend their socially conservative views without being forced to reference the Bible/Koran for justification.
I think the TOTAL lack of answers says quite a bit.

Answer: No, I don't think there is. The opposition to women's rights is religious, the opposition to gay marriage is religious. Which is why many liberals like myself see it as a clear violation of separation of church and state and freedom of religion: We don't need some religious loons legislating their f*cked-up interpretation of the Bible onto us. This isn't Iran. We shouldn't be legislating our "holy books" onto people who don't hold the views of that particular religion. Keep your religious fairy tales out of my laws.

Why would we want the government to be the only ones with firearms?

Think about the question, liberals. Think about the world that would create. Think hard. Think about businesses lobbying the government to make decisions that negatively affect you, without a damn thing you can do about it.

I myself am a liberal every other way but this one. Does a world where the only ones with firearms are our lords sound good? Dont bring up rare atrocities to prove your views for a second. Do you really want the princes to have nothing stopping them from lording it over the peasants?

Because here is what happens when the lefts side of the gun issues viewpoint becomes law.

The only one with guns will be the government. They will use them to enforce said laws, even those you dont agree with (gay marriage, abortion, etc.)

ANd there will be not a damn thing you can do about it.

WHat is more important to you? The prevention of rare atrocities with firearms in the U.S?

Answer: I am very Liberal as well, being pro animal rights and abortion rights, as well as against overpopulation and other environmental issues. But I completely agree with you. The NFA act serves to restrict the civilian population's ability to defend against those who are elected and I find it wrong. I believe we should have the legal right to at least some of the basic infantry weaponry that they give basic soldiers, including things like bazookas and C4 (But not without severe screening and multiple mental evaluations, as well as citing good reasons and giving the most extreme penalties for harming an innocent with the device), if only so the people have the right to fight back in case of tyranny. Nowadays, guns won't do it anymore when it comes to defending against the military if they're commanded to fight us.

If martial law is declared now, the Government could do what it wants and we wouldn't be able to stop them. We may get help from NATO, but otherwise we won't have much Hope in defending ourselves. A personal idea of mine would be to have unions and community classes to teach on how to use military weapons and vehicles, which would be stored in small, locked depots deposited over different counties and states in case of civil war, to allow both sides a fair. You could say this idea is inspired by the mandatory drafts that they have in Israel, who's military structure and culture, I find to be very admirable. Overall, I completely agree with your view and find it a wake up call to the Left. We still need to find ways to defend ourselves, and atrocities like Newtown need to be prevented with better community connections and better mental healthcare.

Answer: I don't think we can say that ALL Christians oppose homosexuality. Unfortunately, the ones who don't oppose homosexuality also aren't about to defend the gays against the Muslims.

What reason is there to ban gay marriage aside from religious beliefs?

I thought we had a seperation of church and state! (And I myself am religious.) Does it have to do with gay parents supposedly not being able to raise kids because theres not a mother/father figure in the home or what?

Answer: The recent federal court ruling which overturned California's prop-8 came as no surprise. Never mind that a majority of people in CA want to define marriage as being the union of one man to one woman; this one judge believes the law deprives gays of their “rights.” I've always been curious, where do these liberal judges believe “rights” come from? Please show me where it is written that there is a “right” for gays to marry. Is there some holy script somewhere that reveals this to us? One thing I've noticed about liberals is that they are very noble-sounding and puffed-up when talking about protecting people's right but they are rather vague on explaining how these people came to have these rights.

It's not discussed as often anymore but our Founding Fathers believed that our rights are given to us by God. This fundamental principle is expressed overtly in our Declaration of Independence. To quote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Note carefully that they are not trying to defend this idea but rather believe it is “self-evident” and needed no further explanation.

Liberals, on the other hand, scoff at such a notion. They're all about “separation of church and state” so to say that rights come from God is an affront to their sensibilities. So I ask again, where do rights come from if not from God? Some might answer that rights are determined by society. OK, if that's true then why should gays have the right to marry when a majority of people have already voted against it? Others will say that our rights are given to us by the government. Well, the government is not really a sentient being by itself but is merely just a body of people. Government officials are supposed to represent the views of the people who elected them so this is simply another case of rights determined by society.

Finally, some people will appeal to some cosmic sense of “fairness.” Rights are somehow universal and simply belong to humanity. This is a very subjective standard. Are these cosmic rules absolute? Where can I go to find them? Show me this universal right to be gay because I don't believe it exists. I suggest that these enigmatic human rights that are supposed to exist are really the ideals of the few liberal elitists that hold them. They “know” what these rights are even though there is truly nowhere we can turn to compare their opinions to an absolute standard. Whatever constitutes a “right” is exactly what a liberal believes is a right and they are appalled when anyone else wants to violate these imagined rights.

If any absolute standard exists, then I say it must be the standard of the Bible. If our rights are endowed by our Creator, it seems fairly certain that something specifically prohibited by God in the Bible could never be considered a God given right. When asked about marriage, Jesus specifically defined marriage as being between one man and one woman (Mark 10:6-9). This sounds strikingly similar to the definition voted on in Prop 8 – the same definition the federal judge says violates the un-enumerated rights of gays.

Let's suppose for a moment that rights aren't given by God. The only remaining objective standard is that rights are defined by society. We need not even appeal to the Bible. I've already pointed out how the law being struck down was already endorsed by a majority of voters. Doesn't a society have the “right” to decide for itself what constitutes marriage? How does the unidentified rights of a minority of gays trump the right of society as a whole?

Marriage is a centuries long tradition practiced everywhere in the world. Some cultures have allowed polygamy but, to my knowledge, no culture has ever recognized gay marriage prior to the last decade or so. In other words, heterosexual marriage is the assumed model. We are not trying to upset the applecart and suddenly ban gay marriage. We are trying to protect the centuries old tradition. It's the gay marriage crowd that wants to change the laws and allow the thing that has never existed in history past. On what grounds do they ask this? Is it only on the shifting grounds that there is a “human right” to be gay? How strange it is that knowledge of this right has eluded all the nations of the world for the entire history of civilization. I say instead that the opposite is true. There is no right to be gay.

Answer: Remember that in the UN there are over 20 Arab countries and over 50 countries with a good Muslim majority. In a majority vote, they have a lot of power. The UN, while it is a good concept, can be very hypocritical.

While in Israel, gays have always been tolerated in the military (We only appealed dont ask dont tell this year), gay marriage is legal, there are Arabs in the government and the Supreme Court, an ARAB WOMAN is a spokesperson for the parliament (find me one Arab country with a woman participating in government), etc...

Answer: I know exactly where you're coming from. But some things you are pretty much forced to know and do because of life. I know it's hard, but there is a certain way you need to present yourself in this country in order to be taken seriously. For example, proper grammar.
Saving yourself for marriage is a personal value to that person, and he/she is looking for that perfect person that is going to understand that.

How is heterosexuality normalized in society?

Any wisdom would be great. I am not getting a full understanding of it in my required readings.
Please answer from a sociological and academic point of view. I appreciate your opinions, but this is for university.

Answer: One way that heterosexuality is normalized is through institutionalized prejudice. Certainly in the US laws play a big part in normalizing heterosexuality. For instance, marriage is currently being legalized in many states as being "between one man and one woman." Also, there are still laws on the books in many states that make it illegal to have a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex.

You can also see institutionalized prejudice in the area of healthcare. Many health insurance policies will not cover a same sex partner. Furthermore, a same sex partner can still be denied to even visit their loved one if he/she is hospitalized. Hospitals defend this by pointing to their policies, which often state that visitation can be restricted only to immediate family, and if the couple is not married then they are technically not family.

Laws regarding inheritance also normalize heterosexuality. It is still common practice in many states to deny any inheritance to a same sex partner, sometimes even when the deceased had a will in place to provide for the survivor.

Adoption law in many states does not allow for same sex partners to adopt children, and in some cases they are restricted from even fostering children. This, in spite of the fact that there are not enough people willing and otherwise able to foster.

Many states' laws still restrict same sex couples ability to co-own real estate or other property (though many couples have been able to find loopholes).

This list is certainly not comprehensive. Not being homosexual myself, I recognize that there are many aspects of everyday life that I am not familiar with that a couple could find themselves legislated out of. All for the sake of heterosexuals' ability to pat themselves on the head and say "see, I'm good because I'm normal"

Answer: Blaming yourself seems to be the first thing you do. Then you realise you're only blaming yourself because you still love the person you're protecting. You defend that person by blaming yourself instead of them<--- Then it hits you....You did nothing wrong.

Me and my wife have been married for 2 years, and have known each other for 3 years. I am 35, and she is 41. Now it seems that every time I have something critical or objective to say, my wife feels as though she has to talk down to me (like I am a little kid, who seems like he does not understand). What is the deal with people defending the LDS church?

A lot of people on here want to be "tolerant" and say that Mormonism is a "religion", not a "cult".
I dont like religion in general, but the group matches up with the general definition of a "cult":
Their leader was a convicted con artist who engaged multiple times (and died) in armed battle with the American government;
They pour money into anti-gay, anti-choice political causes;
And, they exhibit various levels of brainwashing.

Answer: I defend it because it's the truth.

I study all that is offered to me on a subject, and I find that many arguments of the ilk that you have presented here don't hold any water and are great exaggerations if not completely untrue. In fact, most are just hearsay that Pastor BillyBob passes on to his flock to scare them. I know that for a fact, because converted from another religion and have attended many other churches over the years.

--Joseph Smith was NEVER convicted. He stood trial several times but never convicted.

--He did die in prison, however, after he willingly delivered himself to jail with several of his colleagues to stand trial for trivial charges (ie--some people didn't like him.)

--Con-artist? By who's perceptions? There were many people who believed he was the kindest person they had ever met and that he lived to serve others. And then there were people that straight up didn't like him because of his work. That holds true for pretty much every apostle and prophet of ancient times. John the Baptist was beheaded. Peter, the very witness of Jesus, died a horrible death at the hands of persecutors. The apostle Paul served time in prison for his work. You can believe one party, or you can believe the other. I choose to believe that Joseph Smith was a good man.

--Some LDS people chose to support Proposition 8 in California. Many did not. The church encourages its members to support traditional marriage. In the end, it was the voters of California that made the decision, not Mormons.

--I myself am "anti-choice" when it comes to aborting babies. I believe that if you don't want kids, don't make them. I believe that killing children in the womb is exactly the same as killing them outside of the womb--murder. I have never heard of the church as a body engaging in any type of "anti-choice movement," however. If it had, I would have been there. Our church believes that a person's own choices, especially about his or her own body, can only be made by himself, not by others and definitely not by a government. We do believe that a person who has killed a child for selfish reason will be accountable to God.

--I can tell you that the church does not brainwash. I joined the church, willingly left by choice, and rejoined years later by my own choice. One of our church's most pivotal doctrine is something that I have never heard in any others--free agency. We believe that God gave human beings the power to choose what they want to do in every instance because freedom is love. How can forcing someone to believe something by trickery wash with a doctrine such as this? It doesn't.

In Virginia, if you are disabled and already getting disability from the government. you get married, then divorce.
What is the duration time of that marriage in order to receive alimony? For life? For 1/2 the duration of the marriage?

Answer: I'm sorry, I don't know the laws of Virginia...however, having gone through the very painful divorce process myself, I'd encourage you to consider what is morally right and not what some legal precedent permits.

To understand alimony, you need to look back to the late 1800's/early 1900's. At that time, you could have a man with a wife and 6 kids find another woman and run off and leave the family. The woman had little opportunity to work (even many school teachers were required to be single)...hence, often left the families destitute.... Eventually, the legal system caught up and said that this was unfair and that he should pay alimony.... over time, this was "bastardized" to the point that if Tiger Woods' wife did all that he supposedly did, and if she had didn't have a prenup, she would still get alimony in most states (if it was a long enough marriage)... Note that even in Tiger's case, that they had a prenup...yet the legalized extortion is starting for her to ask for far more.

The interesting thing is that if you look at your situation...what's the most money that, if you were single for your life, you would have made? Now, for a few years of marriage, you are now looking to reap much more than that... why? what does the marriage have to do with it? Presumably, you both enjoyed the friendship and closeness. Just because he worked hard to be successful, went to school, invested his skills and became more successful, you are, effectively, claiming that his success is due to you and your marriage - at least in part. Do you really think this? It might be true if you helped him build his business (you were the marketer for the business)... however, it doesn't sound that way... and just because you like your new lifestyle, doesn't mean that you really deserve it going forward when you are about to destroy him emotionally.

It's the concept of unjust enrichment...unfortunately, the legal system is a tad based on legalized extortion... the cost of defending yourself is so high that eventually you capitulate or go bankupt on legal fees.

You sound like you started off life with many challenges.... you now sound like you want to instill/penalize another person (who loved you and you loved him - at least for some time) for the rest of your life not because you're deserving - but because of a legal sysem that was put in place to take care of gross inequity is now abused.

I encourage you to ask yourself as to where would you be now if you hadn't gotten married? If you started with nothing, and you could only early minimum wage and receive disability payments, then you'd still have nothing... Thank your God for having had the opportunity to see a different side and that you have learned that you enjoyed the nicer things in life, but didn't like the person you had to be with to get them... Remember, you will face your God some day... do you want Him or Her to give you what you truly deserve? What would He or She want you to do?.

Answer: Eh .. I wouldn't call it a disorder. I think that's harsh. I guess I would say its not typical. But I think being gay is natural to people who are gay. I've always believed being attracted to someone is an uncontrollable, emotional response. Its not something we choose. No one on this earth can push a button and choose to be attracted to someone. Therefore, I believe people who are gay are born that way and its natural to them.

So I wouldn't call it a disorder. its natural to them. I also agree about gay rights and marriage. It doesn't bother me one bit..

I'm straight too. Whenever I express my feelings about defending gay marriage or rights, people immediately assume I'm gay because of it. IDK.. maybe I just surround myself with idiotic people.
