The Odd Couple
Randy Johnson is 39, listed at 6-foot-10 (though he seems taller), 232 pounds and built like a stick figure. He refers to himself as goofy, a sideshow act and a freak. Curt Schilling is 35, listed at 6-foot-4 (though he seems shorter), 231 pounds. He refers to himself as the hardest working pitcher in baseball, despite a body that resembles a large potato with four toothpicks stuck in it. Their Arizona Diamondback teammates call them the odd couple. Sports Illustrated claims they arent just teammates but a triumph of friends. They play golf together. Schilling razzes Johnson. Johnson defers. Hes taciturn, unapproachable, often angry. ESPN magazine claims Johnson is an unhappy man filled with hate and guilt and fury and a shack of madness, twisting in on himself. Everyone claims Johnson is so unpleasant on days he pitches that his wife, Lisa, is afraid to talk to him.. Pat Jordon article discusses relationship between Arizona Diamondbacks ace pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling; says they are almost polar opposites in habits and preferences, and questions whether they are as close as has been reported; drawing; photos (M)

LaFontaine May Leave a Game He Loves
The genesis of Pat LaFontaines most recent season of discomfort can most likely be traced back to one whopping hit he took on an unforgiving evening at Madison Square Garden nearly seven years ago. April 5, 1990. James Patrick, then a Ranger defenseman, knocked LaFontaine cold with a thundering body check. The night would become remembered more for what happened later, when a band of Ranger fans began to rock and pound on the ambulance that was attempting to carry LaFontaine, who had a concussion, from the Garden to a Manhattan hospital.. Pat LaFontaine of Buffalo Sabres is still recovering from concussion he sustained on Oct 17, 1996; he is considering whether to retire from hockey at age 32; photos (M)

Writers Find Their Stage Is a Small World
JOHN BLENNS first play, Xs and Os, had its premiere at the Stage Theater in Merrick in 1995. Since then, he has written 24 other full-length plays, turning out these sit-com-style social commentaries nearly as fast as he can type. Every one has been performed on a Long Island stage. That makes Mr. Blenn unusual because on the Island, playwrights have few opportunities to present original works. In fact, Mr. Blenn has made his own opportunities; like an author who self-publishes, he acts and directs with his own ragtag traveling thespian troupe, Middle Class American Productions, which presents his plays at local theaters. Among them is the Brokerage in Bellmore, a 130-seat club better known for its weekend lineup of standup comedy fare, which is putting on his Bloomer Pudding for a three-night run beginning tomorrow.. Article on dearth of theaters on Long Island that offer opportunities for local playwrights to present new plays; local theater directors and playwrights say audiences shy away from the unfamiliar and economic difficulties of presenting new plays are formidable; plyawright John Blenn, whose play, Bloomer Pudding, will be presented at Brokerage in Bellmore, Frederic De Feis, producer-director of Arena Players Repertory Co and others comment; photos (M)

How a Deal Crowned A New King Of Wall St.
THANKS to the Banc One Corporation and First USA Inc., the historic $10.2 billion merger of the Morgan Stanley Group and Dean Witter, Discover & Company was almost derailed -- at least for a moment. It was mid-January, and after three years of flirting and several weeks of serious talk, Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter executives had agreed on a deal and settled on a price: Morgan Stanley shareholders were to receive 1.65 shares of Dean Witter stock for every share they held. The number was the average exchange ratio between the two stocks for the previous 30 days.. Historic $10.2 billion merger of Morgan Stanley Group and Dean Witter, Discover Co was almost derailed on Jan 20 when Banc One Corp announced that it was buying First USA Inc, a credit card company, for $7.3 billion in stock; hefty price sent First USAs stock soaring $8.875 in a day; most stocks in the sector moved up, too; Dean Witters climbed 7 percent in next few days; Morgan Stanleys did not; and some people familiar with talks advised Dean Witters chief executive Philip J Purcell to lower his bid; Purcell knew that Morgans brass--Richard B Fisher, chairman and chief executive, and John J Mack, president--wouild hear nothing of it; Purcell stood pat; photo (L)

TODDLERS TAKE TO THE SLOPES
There is no thing more humiliating to an adult skier who is making nice neat tur ns down a moderately steep slope than to have a 9- or 10-year-old w hiz by with a short swing under perfect control. Well, there is one thing more humiliating - thats when a 4- or 5-year-old does it. We adults are going to be seeing more and more of those endearing ankle biters on the slopes, so we might as well get our egos in gear. A decade ago, any child of nursery-school age seen actually skiing was almost always the offspring of the area manager or ski school director. Usually toddlers were either treated to a ride between a parents legs or were allowed to slide around at the bottom of the slope on those red plastic boards that looked like small sleds strapped to the feet. Part of conventional wisdom was that children under 7 or 8 really could not learn the eye-foot-body coordination that was necessary to proper skiing.

That is how the next few weekends should go for the teams that share the No. 1 positions in the two polls that attempt to determine a national championship in the absence of a playoff.
