TWO MORE TONY CATEGORIES DROPPED

Two more categories were dropped from the Tony Awards yesterday in an unusual action by the nominating committee. The 11-member committee unanimously voted not to give any award for leading actor in a musical or for choreography. This decision came four days after the Tony administration committee scrapped the award for leading actress in a musical. Theater historians and Tony administrators say they cannot recall an instance when one category was dropped from the awards, much less three. The truncated Tony program reflects the bleak state of the Broadway musical this year. Only seven opened, only three are still running and none received better than mixed notices.

The Timess New Blogs: More Information, Fewer Filters

BLOGGING has made its way to The New York Times. Across the papers Web site, blogs run by assigned staffers are posting opinions and information they consider insightful on topics such as dining, wine, real estate and the financial world. And The Times has a bunch on the drawing boards, Jonathan Landman, the deputy managing editor, told me Tuesday. The Times has been slower than the online versions of The Washington Post and other newspapers to embrace full-fledged blogging. That cautious approach hasnt bothered me, given my conviction that serious journalism starts with the authentication and verification of information. Staffers directly posting their own thoughts or those of others that they found insightful -- generally the essence of blogging -- was a step to be taken with care at a serious paper.. Byrone Calame, in Public Editor column, notes that blogging has made its way to New York Times; says that across papers Web site, blogs run by assigned staffers are posting opinions and information on topics such as dining, wine, real estate and financial world; contends that most intriguing blog on papers site is DealBook, which follows deals on Wall Street and in financial community; maintains that readers should keep in mind that much of information there has not been verified (M)

TONY NOMINATIONS ARE ANNOUNCED

The top nominations for this years Tony Awards, which were announced yesterday, went to The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the leading musical with 11 nominations, and The House of Blue Leaves, which led among straight plays with eight. Among the other musicals, Song & Dance also received eight nominations, and Sweet Charity and Big Deal gained five each. Loot, a revival of Joe Ortons play, also received five nominations. The 40th annual awards ceremony will be televised live from the Minskoff Theater on June 1. An unusual aspect of this years lineup is that two of the nominees for best play - Athol Fugards Blood Knot and John Guares House of Blue Leaves - are revivals of works first seen in New York many years ago. Both had earlier been relegated to the category of best reproduction, a decision protested by their producers. In a controversial reversal of its initial decision, the Tony administration committee ruled last week that both revivals were eligible to compete for best play on the grounds that neither had run on Broadway before. The other nominees for best play are Michael Frayns Benefactors and Herb Gardners Im Not Rappaport.
