Why did Travon Martin get on top of George Zimmerman, and repeatedly punch him in the face, braking his nose?
and slamming his head into the pavement splitting his head open to the point that it had to be sewn up? btw 1. read the transcripts Zimmerman was not told not to follw the late travon 2. the facts and eye witness testimony as well as the broken nose and head laceration (his head was lying when split open and bleeding?) match perfectly and the medical report shows he had a broken nose. some "retaliation" for following a prowler
Answer: Some clarification on a few things...
He did not require stitches, at least he didn't 24 hours later after he visited his primary care doctor. This does not necessarily mean he did not need them immediately after the attack, however a day later when he was evaluated they found it unnecessary because they were either healing as they should or there wasn't enough subsequent blood loss. However this was one doctor's opinion 24 hours later, an ER doctor treating him 20 minutes after may have had a different opinion on it. Zimmerman declined treatment mainly due to feeling that he could avoid a costly ER visit and simply follow up with his family doc the next day. In interviews he briefly mentioned how bad his insurance is and ER visits, exams, testing would likely result in him being responsible for 100% of the cost. So likely he bypassed an ER visit, MRI, X-rays etc simply because it would have been unaffordable for him. Quite honestly, health care costs in America should be getting way more attention than this story anyway. No one should have to have bad insurance, but that's a different topic entirely.
His nose was diagnosed as fractured, and judging by the black and white picture the police took minutes after they arrived, that seems like an accurate diagnosis. His nose is swollen about 3 times its normal size and obviously looks deformed. So there's no doubt he took several blows to the face, as well as the back of his head. One of the EMTs from the scene even testified at a pre-trial hearing that his head was "45% covered in blood" when they arrived.
I think a lot of people are expecting excessive injuries in a scenario like this. Self defense laws don't require a certain amount of injury before use of force is justified and rightfully so, if a woman is attacked on the street and shoots her assailant, are people really going to gauge the amount of her injuries to determine whether she felt close enough to death? No. The law in this case and many other states simply require fear of death or serious bodily harm to justify use of force.
The thing with this case is, that no matter how much Zimmerman is portrayed to be a vigilante he was within his legal rights. The community had a long history of break ins, he felt Martin was suspicious and kept an eye on him. Sure, the dispatcher told him he "didn't need to do that" when he admitted he was following Martin, but that was a suggestion for his safety and not a direct order with any sort of legal obligation with it. There is nothing illegal about seeing a suspicious person, calling the police and keeping them in your sight. The prosecutors will never be able to prove there was any intent to harm when he got out of the car, its impossible and it will never realistically happen at trial.
Keep in mind this is a person who already communicated with police, gave his location and even at one point asked how soon the police would be there. This isn't typically the strategy someone would use if they were inclined to serve vigilante style justice. In fact, no one in their right mind would call the police and then actively hunt down someone with the intent to harm or kill them, especially when they have no past history of hostile confrontations with strangers, or really any one for that matter. Has all the media coverage surrounding the Trayvon Martin shooting case tainted a jury pool?
Can George Zimmerman possibly get a fair trial at this point? There are a number of other issues that raise some other questions, such as the idea that the prosecutor in this case seems to be a little too personally involved with the family of Trayvon Martin. Various news outlets indicate that the prosecutor participated in a prayer service with the family before the charges were handed down. Additionally, she was on record as having spoken with the "sweet parents" of Trayvon. This seems to be rather out of line for a prosecutor, who should be focusing on the facts of the case rather than personal feelings. Sure, she is human, but there seems to be a danger that her feelings (rather than evidence) may be coming too much into play here.
Further, it seems that the 911 call may have been doctored, and at the very least, selectively edited. That was already proven when NBC admitted to choosing select portions of the call to be aired, then issued an apology and fired the producer who was believed to be the most responsible for the edited version of the call.
In light of all of this, and other events surrounding the case, coupled with all the high-profile coverage of this case, has it gotten to the point where any jury in this case is likely to be tainted (especially a local jury), and is it even possible now for George Zimmerman to get a fair trial?
Answer: It's too early to tell whether the media coverage has tainted the jury pool for this case.
I think the media coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting has been irresponsible. The coverage has been biased, the media has jumped to conclusions, found George Zimmerman guilty and play judge, jury and executioner. Category: Current Events
